Right Livelihood – Dharma Talk by David Sudar (9-1-2020)

Details:

Originally given on 9/1/2020 at the Path of Sincerity Tuesday night Sangha, by David Sudar.

Description:

Continuing our series on the Noble Eightfold Path, we’re knee-deep in the territory of sila, which refers to our ethical conduct, behavior, virtue, and ways we show up in our everyday life.

In this talk, we’re going to cover “Right Livelihood,” which looks at what the tradition suggests about our work-life.  Apart from perhaps sleep, there’s likely nothing we spend more of our time on than our work.  In that spirit, it’s important to see the degree to which we can bring our practice into that domain of our lives.  Some of the questions I take into this talk:

  • The specific list of professions to be avoided
  • Avoiding harm vs. adding benefit (“right service”?)
  • The what we do
  • The how we do (attitudes of wise work)
  • What to do when you feel stuck in your work-life, for whatever reason
