Summary

This course will offer a holistic approach to finding freedom by releasing resentment and emotional pain.

We’ll draw upon Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Fourfold Path to Forgiveness, Buddhist psychology & mindfulness meditation, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — grounding our approach in somatic exploration, self-compassion, emotional regulation, and the power of narrative to shape experience.

You’ll also learn the essential difference between forgiveness, which is an internal gift-to-self of releasing painful resentment, and external reconciliation, which is optional, and can be done with or without clear boundaries.

As a note, this is course was born of my own desire to find release from different resentments that had plagued me for years.  In my own seeking, I stitched together the resources offered in the course in a way that has dramatically released emotional pain that I had been holding for years and decades.  If I can do it, so can you!

Essential Disclaimer:

Rather than trying to forgive every last person you have resentment towards, the flow of course will focus on forgiving one person (which could be yourself), and moving through the stages of the forgiveness process.

As this is a group learning experience, it is strongly recommended that you do not choose someone who is likely to cause re-traumatization or major dysregulation.  If you do wish do go that direction, it would be essential to have licensed professional support who know what course you are taking and are prepared to help you navigate the turbulent waters that may be stirred up in a one-on-one context.

Course Notes:

The course will involve a dynamic mix of short lecture, large & small group discussion, journaling exercises, and guided meditations.  Attendance will be capped in order to ensure a community feel.

I ask anyone who signs up to commit to meditating for 10 to 15 minutes, at least 5 times a week.  I will provide weekly guided meditations.

People of all backgrounds are welcome & respected.  As a note, I come from a Buddhist background, and will be weaving those perspectives into the course, but at the core, forgiveness is 100% secular — it is a timeless human process of releasing resentment.

Cost & Commitment:

In staying in integrity with the 2,600-year-old Buddhist tradition, this course will be offered on the “gift economy;” aka on donation, as a practice of mutual giving and receiving.

As donation-based offerings are a bit foreign in our culture, I request that you read over this article on how to think about the financial part of donation-based courses.  I trust that whatever you donate will be the perfect amount.  No one will be turned away or judged for lack of funds!

Also, just as importantly, offered-on-donation doesn’t mean “come when you feel like it” or “only participate halfway.”  While of course life happens and you may have to miss a week or two, I’d request that you make a genuine commitment to showing up and doing the practices — that’s the only real way to turn these teachings from a good idea into something that truly makes a difference in your life.
